c70bfe980a build!: Switch to openedx-core (renamed from openedx-learning) (#38011)
build!: Switch to openedx-core (renamed from openedx-learning)

Instead of installing openedx-learning==0.32.0, we install openedx-core==0.34.1.
We update various class names, function names, docstrings, and comments to
represent the rename:

* We say "openedx-core" when referring to the whole repo or PyPI project
  * or occasionally "Open edX Core" if we want it to look nice in the docs.
* We say "openedx_content" to refer to the Content API within openedx-core,
   which is actually the thing we have been calling "Learning Core" all along.
  * In snake-case code, it's `*_openedx_content_*`.
  * In camel-case code, it's `*OpenedXContent*`

For consistency's sake we avoid anything else like oex_core, OeXCore,
OpenEdXCore, OexContent, openedx-content, OpenEdxContent, etc.
There should be no more references to learning_core, learning-core, Learning Core,
Learning-Core, LC, openedx-learning, openedx_learning, etc.

BREAKING CHANGE: for openedx-learning/openedx-core developers:
You may need to uninstall openedx-learning and re-install openedx-core
from your venv. If running tutor, you may need to un-mount openedx-learning,
rename the directory to openedx-core, re-mount it, and re-build.
The code APIs themselves are fully backwards-compatible.

8ad4d42e3b feat!: Remove proctortrack references; add requires_escalation_email and show_review_rules options (#37576)
BREAKING CHANGE: All references to the hardcoded 'proctortrack' string have
been removed from the codebase, as well as the `studio.show_review_rules`
waffle flag. These were used to determine whether an escalation email is
required and whether review rules should be shown. These decisions are now made
based on the value of 'requires_escalation_email' (default False) and 'show_review_rules'
(default True) config items in the PROCTORING_BACKENDS entry.

Additionally:
* The proctoring info api will now return the list of providers which require an escalation
   email so that frontend-app-learning does not need to use a hardcoded check agaist
   the provider name 'proctortrack'.
* Removed translation commands, mock variables and user facing strings that contained
  'proctortrack'.
* Updated all test cases that were using proctortrack to use fake providers names.

834cb9482d refactor: rename ModuleStore runtimes now that XModules are gone (#35523)
* Consolidates and renames the runtime used as a base for all the others:
  * Before: `xmodule.x_module:DescriptorSystem` and
            `xmodule.mako_block:MakoDescriptorSystem`.
  * After:  `xmodule.x_module:ModuleStoreRuntime`.

* Co-locates and renames the runtimes for importing course OLX:
  * Before: `xmodule.x_module:XMLParsingSystem` and
            `xmodule.modulestore.xml:ImportSystem`.
  * After:  `xmodule.modulestore.xml:XMLParsingModuleStoreRuntime` and
            `xmodule.modulestore.xml:XMLImportingModuleStoreRuntime`.
  * Note: I would have liked to consolidate these, but it would have
          involved nontrivial test refactoring.

* Renames the stub Old Mongo runtime:
  * Before: `xmodule.modulestore.mongo.base:CachingDescriptorSystem`.
  * After: `xmodule.modulestore.mongo.base:OldModuleStoreRuntime`.

* Renames the Split Mongo runtime, the which is what runs courses in LMS and CMS:
  * Before: `xmodule.modulestore.split_mongo.caching_descriptor_system:CachingDescriptorSystem`.
  * After: `xmodule.modulestore.split_mongo.runtime:SplitModuleStoreRuntime`.

* Renames some of the dummy runtimes used only in unit tests.

795d039581 feat: Upstream Sync with Content Library Blocks (#34925)
This introdues the idea of "upstream" and "downstream" content,
where downstreams (like course components) can pull content updates from
upstreams (like learning core-backed content library blocks). This
supports the upcoming Content Libraries Relaunch Beta for Sumac.
New features include:

* A new XBlockMixin: UpstreamSyncMixin.
* A new CMS Python API: cms.lib.xblock.upstream_sync
* A new CMS JSON API: /api/contentstore/v2/downstreams
* A temporary, very basic UI for syncing from Content Library blocks

Implements:

4c0284b87d Revert "build: finish replacing paver assets (#34554)" (#34700)
Reverts #34554, which causes compilation of edX.org's
legacy comprehensive theme to be skipped in their deployment pipeline.
We have not determined the precise cause yet, but it seems like the
compile_sass management command is not correctly getting the
list of comprehensive theme directories from Django settings.

3f0f7ce705 build: finish replacing paver assets (#34554)
Together, these changes make it so that all features of the Paver-based
asset compilation system are supported with drop-in Paver-free
replacements. The remaining Paver asset functions are trivial wrappers,
which can be comfortably deleted before Sumac.

* Turn `./manage.py ... compile_sass` into a simple wrapper around `npm
  run compile-sass`
* Turn `paver webpack` into a simple wrapper around `npm run webpack`
* Turn `pavelib.assets:collect_assets` into a simple wrapper around
  `./manage.py ... collectstatic`
* Add/improve deprecation warnings for all Paver asset commands.
* Load defaults for asset-related Django settings from environment
  variables. This allows the build to work without Python. For the
  settings which will be removed in Sumac, I've added deprecation
  warnings.
* Change EDX_PLATFORM_THEME_DIRS env var to COMPREHENSIVE_THEME_DIRS.
  This simplifies the migration instructions, because all the new env
  vars now match their corresponding Django settings. This amends an
  ADR, but it should not be a breaking change because the env var was
  recently added (since Quince) and nobody should be using it yet.
* Future-proof the static assets ADR with links. The linked pages will
  be kept up-to-date even if the ADR isn't.

265701c01d feat!: remove library_sourced block (#33257)
Originally, we planned to add support for V2 libraries and for static
(hand-selected) library block reference via new block type: library_sourced.

We have since decided that it would be better to add those capabilities
in-place to the existing library_content block. This will ease V1->V2
library migration and make adoption of the new features easier for current
library users. It will also avoid duplication of logic between two block types,
we we fear would be error-prone. For details, see this ADR:
 https://github.com/openedx/edx-platform/pull/33231

So, we are removing the library_sourced block.
This block has existed in edx-platform for a few years now, but was not
enabled by default and never officially supported. It was only usable via the
experimental V2 content library feature. Operators who added library_sourced
blocks to their course will now see them render as `HiddenBlock` instances, i.e.:

> ERROR: "library_sourced" is an unknown component type...

This should not impact other component types in such courses and should not
impact import/export.

303bf5ef3c build: npm run watch (experimental) (#32866)
Implements the `npm run watch` section of the assets ADR [1], plus some
modifications since I decided to switch from pywatchman to watchdog (see
ADR changes for justification). This will replace `paver watch_assets`
(edx-platform) and `openedx-assets watch-themes` (Tutor).

Specifically, this PR adds three experimental commands:

* `npm run watch-sass` : Watch for Sass changes with watchdog.
* `npm run watch-webpack` : Invoke Webpack-watch for JS changes.
* `npm run watch` : Invoke both `watch-sass` and `watch-webpack` simultaneously.

These commands are only intended to work in development mode. They have
been tested both on bare-metal edx-platform and through `tutor dev run`
on on Linux.

Before removing the "experimental" label, we need to:

* Test through Devstack on Linux.
* Test through Devstack and `tutor dev run` on macOS.
* Test on bare-metal macOS. Might not work, which is OK, but we should
  document that.
* Document the commands in edx-platform's README.
* Confirm that this not only works through `tutor dev run`, but also as
  a suitable replacement in the `watchthemes` service that Tutor runs
  automatically as part of `tutor dev start`. Tweak if necessary.

4b64d8342d build: copy from node_modules using NPM postinstall hook, not Paver (#32717)
During the review of ADR 17 [1], Régis pointed out [2] that the shell script
which replaces Paver's `process_npm_assets` could be automatically invoked as
an NPM post-install hook, ensuring that the step is seamlessly executed whenever
`npm install` is run. I had avoided using that suggestion, as I worried that it
would make it harder to move node_modules out of the edx-platform directory in
Tutor's openedx image.

Since then, two things have changed. Firstly, Tutor v16's new persistent mounts
interface [3] has lessened the importance of moving node_modules. Secondly, I
have realized that using a post-install hook would not preclude us from
modifying the underlying script (scripts/copy-node-modules.sh) to look in an
alternative location for node_modules, should that end up being something we
want to do.

This commit modifies the ADR based on those findings, stubs out Paver's
`process_npm_assets`, and adds the suggested post-install hook and replacement
Bash script.

6b2d3fb807 docs: downgrade settings ADR status to "Provisional" (#32113)
The ideas here are good and in line with OEP-45, but we have not
yet had a chance to implement them in edx-platform

Furthermore, recent conversations have made us consider
revisiting the "Don't use YAML files, just python modules"
alternative described in the ADR. Particularly, Tutor has
not been able to use pure YAML to configure edx-platform,
and has fallen back on having separate .py settings files.
This makes us think that we either need to expose
more power through the YAML interface, or we need to
re-embrace .py settings files.
